Ban on animal & meat transportation lifted

December 21, 2022 at 3:28 PM

The temporary ban that was imposed on the transportation of animals and meat, mainly in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, has been lifted, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

Earlier, the transportation and sale of meat were prohibited in the North and East after over 1600 animals, including cows and goats, had died suddenly.

Investigations conducted by the Department of Animal Production and Health in Peradeniya confirmed that the animals had died due to shock as a result of the extreme cold weather event.

The Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health in Peradeniya stated today that lab tests have confirmed that the deaths of these animals have not been caused due to any epidemic.

The Director General further said that the cattle that had died on the 08th and 09th of December were due to shock as a result of cold weather, adding that the situation has now subsided.

The PMD said that thereby, animal and meat transportation is now permitted islandwide. (NewsWire)
