Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has reportedly reapplied for his United States (US) citizenship, the Sunday Times newspaper reported.

Rajapaksa left Sri Lanka in December 2022 along with his family and is currently in Dubai on holiday.

It was initially reported that he had left for the US via Dubai, but Gotabaya Rajapaksa had no visa to travel to the United States.

According to the report, Rajapaksa via his lawyers has made an appeal to the US State Department to restore his US citizenship.

However, the request for the restoration of his US Citizenship, which he renounced to contest the 2019 Presidential election, is yet to be considered by the US authorities, the Sunday Times report added.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa had made an appeal for the restoration of his US Citizenship after he failed to seek asylum in any country upon fleeing Sri Lanka during the anti-government protests in 2022.

The report says that a knowledgeable source from the US Embassy has confirmed that the former President’s efforts for US citizenship are yet to be successful. (NewsWire)
