Recommendations cannot be made to import eggs from India and Pakistan due to the spread of bird flu, Director General of the Animal Production and Health Department Dr. Hemali Kothalawala said.

Dr. Kothalawala attended a press briefing yesterday (11) in the backdrop of the government having called for tenders for the importation of eggs.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Kothalawa assured that in the event eggs are imported, then it will be done so from countries that have not been affected by bird flu 06 months prior to Sri Lanka announcing the tenders.

“We will ensure that these countries have not been affected by bird flu at least six months prior to the date on which Sri Lanka has announced tenders for the importation of eggs, chicks, chicken meat and related products,” she said.

Meanwhile, in a separate media briefing, the Sri Lanka Veterinary Association and All Ceylon Egg Producers Association have requested the government to refrain from importing eggs. (NewsWire)
