A woman who was arrested over the abduction of a man and his grandson in Negombo over a drug deal has died while in prison custody.
The 47-year-old woman was arrested in Grandpass last week (06) for having abducted the 54-year-old man and his 10-year-old grandson, as the man’s son had failed to settle the full payment after purchasing a stock of heroin from her.
The woman who had abducted the father and nephew of her client had released the man while holding the child hostage in return for the balance payment.
However, the Police STF rescued the child and arrested the woman in a sting operation, after which she was placed in remand custody at the women’s unit at the Colombo Magazine Prison.
According to Lankadeepa, the prison informed Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala yesterday (11) that the woman had died due to a sudden illness.
The woman placed in the women’s unit at the Colombo Magazine Prison had been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital due to suddenly falling ill and had passed away while receiving treatment at the hospital.
The deceased is a 47-year-old resident of Sedawatte in Wellampitiya who was in remand custody from 6th January 2023. (NewsWire)
