The Supreme Court yesterday ordered the former Officer-In-Charge of the Minor Complaints Division of the Thalangama Police Station to pay Rs.50,000 from his personal funds in compensation to a doctor over an incident reported in 2018.

The court also ordered the government to pay Rs.50,000 to the doctor, after ruling that the doctor’s fundamental rights had been violated by the said Police officer.

Issuing its verdict, the court ruled that the fundamental rights of Dr. Harendra De Silva Jayasinghe had been violated when he had been beaten and placed in the Police cell when he had attempted to file a complaint about a threat against him.

The court was informed that the doctor went to the Thalangama Police Station on 16th November 2018 to file a complaint regarding a threat made to him by a group of persons.

However, the Police officers grabbed him by his shirt and put him in the police cell without paying attention to his complaint.

After considering the facts, the court announced that the doctor’s fundamental rights had been violated.

The verdict was issued by Justice Kumuduni Wickramasinghe, when the petition in this regard was called before the Bench of Supreme Court Justices Priyantha Jayawardene, S.Thurairaja, and Kumuduni Wickramasinghe. (NewsWire)
