The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has been instructed to conduct a separate inquiry to ascertain if the documents that were handed over to the Department of Immigration and Emigration to obtain State Minister Diana Gamage’s passport are reported to be missing.

According to the Daily News, the directive was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday (02), who also observed that in the event the original copy of the birth certificate provided by Diana Gamage to the Immigration Department is not available, the investigation can proceed using the scanned copy of the said documents.

Appearing on behalf of the CID, Attorney-at-law, ASP Chanaka De Silva informed the Magistrate that they cannot make any submission regarding the case until they receive the MLA report from the British High Commission.

The Magistrate further ordered the CID to submit copies of all the statements that have been recorded thus far in relation to the case, before the court on the next calling date.

The CID informed the court that the accused has not handed over her passport to its Department so far and that they will obtain necessary orders in this regard.

The Magistrate observed that a written notice will be given to the Attorney General informing him to intervene in this case. The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for March 23. (NewsWire)
