Lawyer Nuwan Bopage filed a case against the Registrar General who refused to record the father’s nationality as “Sri Lankan” on his child’s birth certificate.

However, on Friday (10), during the hearing at the Court of Appeal, the Registrar General agreed to include the father’s nationality as “Sri Lankan” in the birth certificate.

Consequently, the hearing of the writ petition filed by Bopage was ended, with his rights as the petitioner being preserved by the court.

Bopage filed the writ application after the Registrar General declined to register his son’s birth certificate due to the mandatory requirement of indicating the father’s race in the registration process. Bopage had requested the Registrar General to either include the father’s race as “Human” or “Sri Lankan” or to leave it blank, as stated in his petition. (NewsWire)
