The Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila is reportedly facing a crisis with unclaimed bodies handed over by the Sri Lanka Police, it has been reported.

According to the Sunday Times, the hospital is in possession of 28 unclaimed bodies which have been at the hospital’s morgue over the last 14 months.

The Hospital’s Director Dr Sagari Kiriwandeniya stated that the hospital has a capacity of 36 drawers out of which 28 bodies are unclaimed bodies submitted by the police.

Dr Sagari Kiriwandeniya stated that as a result there are only 08 drawers left for those who die in the hospital.

Stating that the hospital is facing an issue of exceeding its capacity to store bodies, he said this was due to the Police failing to produce the next-of-kin of the deceased.

Dr Sagari Kiriwandeniya said, thereby, a decision has been taken to halt the accepting of unclaimed bodies from outside handed over by the Sri Lanka Police. (NewsWire)
