Faulty medicine leaves 10 with impaired eyesight in Sri Lanka

Ten patients who underwent surgery at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital have reported complete loss of eyesight or weakness in sight, it was reported.

The Director of the Nuwara Eliya General Hospital Dr. Mahendra Seneviratne stated that the eyesight of the patients had been affected post-surgery due to the presence of germs in a medicine imported.

According to Ada Derana, Dr. Mahendra Seneviratne revealed that patients who underwent surgery after April 05 had either lost their eyesight or had weakened sight.

He further stated that those who had completely lost their eyesight due to the medication given following surgery have been readmitted to the hospital.

Dr. Mahendra Seneviratne said that those patients are being given the necessary treatment and are being gradually cured.  

The Director of the Nuwara Eliya General stated that the relevant state authorities have been informed in this regard and an investigation is underway into the matter. 

Dr. Mahendra Seneviratne that the Ministry of Health has also notified the company that had imported the faulty medication in this regard. (NewsWire)
