First Lady Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe graces Convocation of South Eastern University

First Lady Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe graced the 15th Annual General Convocation of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka which was held on 13th and 14th May 2023, where she delivered the Convocation Address.

This significant event took place at the University’s Main Auditorium under the auspices of the Vice Chancellor, Professor A. Rameez, and in the esteemed presence of the Chancellor, Dr. Faisz Musthapha, PC. The convocation was graced with the presence of Deans, Academics, Directors of various institutes, the Acting Registrar, Librarian, and Acting Bursar, among other distinguished guests.

The event marked the graduation of 1852 students across a broad spectrum of study disciplines. These disciplines included Arts and Culture, Management and Commerce, Islamic Studies and Arabic Language, Applied Sciences, ICT, Bio-System Technology, and Engineering. The graduation ceremony stands as the most prestigious academic event in the annual calendar of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.

On the first day of the convocation, May 13th, the session for the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Technology was conducted. In this session, the esteemed academic, Chair and Senior Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe from the Department of English, University of Kelaniya, graced the event to deliver the Convocation Address. She delivered a thought-provoking speech, focusing on the evolving global higher education system and the need for local universities to adapt to these changes. She placed particular emphasis on the importance of updating the curriculum to foster critical thinking among graduates.

The second session was dedicated to the Faculty of Management and Commerce, encompassing both postgraduate and undergraduate degrees. The third session celebrated the achievements of students from the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies. His Lordship AHMD. Nawaz, the Judge of the Supreme Court, delivered the Convocation Address for this session.

The convocation continued on May 14th with two sessions. The first session was for the graduates of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Engineering, where Emeritus Prof. Thangamuthu Jayasingham, former Vice Chancellor of Eastern University, delivered the Convocation Address. The second session commemorated the accomplishments of students from the External Degree programs of the Faculty of Arts and Culture and the Faculty of Management and Commerce.

The event also recognized and awarded the best students from each faculty for their outstanding academic performance in their respective disciplines. (NewsWire)
