Three youths have been arrested for seriously injuring a woman over a social media dispute.

According to the Police, a woman from Athurugiriya allegedly involved in prostitution is reported to have used the photograph of another woman to engage in her trade via social media.

The boyfriend of the woman whose photograph had been misused had contacted the woman from Athurugiriya and had lured her to a hotel in the area.

The youth, along with three of his friends had arrived at the hotel, and he had also informed his girlfriend to arrive at the hotel along with her mother.

The woman from Athurugiriya had arrived at the hotel with another man and had engaged in a conversation with the youths, but had fled as the woman whose photograph she had misused had arrived at the location.

As the suspect woman had fled on a motorcycle with the man she had arrived with, the youth along with two of his friends had chased behind in a car and had caused an accident, resulting in the woman sustaining injuries.

The woman who had sustained serious injuries has been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, while the youth and two of his friends have been arrested over the incident.

The three men have been identified as residents of Athurugiriya and Homagama aged 21 and 22 years.

The men who were arrested by the Athurugiriya Police have been remanded until May 26, 2023, after being produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court.

Meanwhile, Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa has requested the public to refrain from taking social media disputes into their own hands.

Citing the incident in Athurugiriya, SSP Thalduwa advised the public to reach out to the Police before taking any form of action. (NewsWire)
