The driver of a lorry and his assistant who were arrested for the possession of thirty-one (31) empty bullet casings in the vicinity of the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy have been released on bail.

Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa told the media yesterday (19) that the empty bullet casings were found after a lorry that had arrived to collect garbage at the Sri Dalada Maligawa had been inspected by security officials.

The security officials had found 31 empty bullet casings of T56 weapons inside a bag kept separately in the lorry.

SSP Thalduwa said upon being inquired the two suspects had revealed that they had found the stock of empty bullet casings while collecting garbage from an Army Camp in the area.

As the empty bullet casings could be sold for scrap metal in exchange for cash, the suspects had stated they had kept it aside for this purpose.

SSP Thalduwa further stated that the suspects who were apprehended for investigations into the matter were released on bail after being produced before the court.

He stated that investigations conducted thus far have not proven any motive to carry out a crime, adding that the Police are continuing investigations into the matter. (NewsWire)
