OGMUN convenes: Reinventing standards

Outstanding Global Model United Nations (OGMUN) is a crisis simulation of the United Nations, which aims to reinvent the standard of the field of Model United Nations in Sri Lanka. As a conference, OGMUN strives to guide each delegate to use their voice to speak for and against issues that they are passionate about and to foster learning, leadership, and critical thinking skills among them.

Unlike other MUN conferences in the island, OGMUN is a crisis simulation that trains delegates to solve global issues in real-time. The novice committees, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), focused on a vast array of global issues, allowing delegates to tackle them one by one. The committee set in 2045, the Futuristic Economic and Social Council (FECOSOC), gave delegates an insight into what the global economy may look like in the future. What set the conference apart was the presence of two parallel historic committees, the Historic Security Council (HSC) and the Historic Council of Non-State Actors (HCNSA) set in 2001, which provided a platform for more seasoned delegates to truly push their boundaries and explore more in the MUN arena. Over 250 delegates from 15 institutions inclusive of schools, universities, and other educational institutions were able to engage in invigorating debate.

The conference was held on the 24th and 25th of June at the Colombo Innovation Towers and was graced by the presence of the former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Deshamanya Radhika Coomaraswamy, who was also the Chief Guest for the event.

For the first time in the history of Model United Nations conferences in Sri Lanka, OGMUN conducted an exhibition debate in which the chairpersons of the conference participated in a crisis simulation for the delegates to view. This was a phenomenal opportunity for MUNers to witness exemplary MUN alumni who have climbed their way up the global ladder in action in an electrifying debate, which no other conference has ever done before. The exhibition debate was live-streamed on YouTube for all MUNers around the globe to experience and can be found on the conference’s YouTube channel.

After an intense two days of debate and countless nights of research, it was time for the most prestigious award of any MUN conference to be announced. The Best Institution Award for Outstanding Global Model United Nations 2023 was awarded to.

This conference would not have been possible if it was not for the institutions that partnered with OGMUN, including the Academy of Design (AOD) as our Design Educational Partner and Venue Partner, Focal Media as our Photography Partner, and Grapcreate as our Digital Solutions Partner among multitudes of other sponsors who contributed towards its success.
