In the wake of the world’s struggles, many countries collapsed and remained anarchic for many years, but President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s correct leadership led to the restoration of Sri Lanka within a short period of one year, (SLPP) M.P. Mahindananda Aluthgamage said.
He said that July 09 will go down in history as the day President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence was set ablaze and public property was destroyed.
M.P. Mahindananda Aluthgamage added that the legal proceedings are now shedding light on the agenda behind the Aragalaya.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe who entered office when no one else stepped forward to do so, is currently restoring the nation’s economy, MP Aluthgamage further said.
He expressed these views yesterday (09) during a press conference themed ‘Collective Path to a Stable Country’ held at the Presidential Media Center (PMC).
M.P. Mahindananda Aluthgamage further commented:
Today is the 09th of July. Today marks the exact one-year anniversary of the removal from office of a democratically elected president of this country. A strong public attitude was formed against him as a result of some of his decisions and numerous global crises. We noticed a lot of significant objectives in the Aragalaya. To achieve such objectives, the citizens of this country came together. We encountered 13-hour power outages, long queues for gas and fuel, and daily socio-economic pressure on the populace. However, the participants in the peaceful struggle who were subjected to this pressure had no intention to harm government property, set fire to houses, assault, or murder people.
It is now clear what the purpose of this struggle was. And it is coming to light during the legal procedure. Some of the activists of the Aragalaya have received millions of dollars into their accounts from foreign nations. A court case defendant has received money from Guatemala. Guatemala is a country that is heavily involved in international drug trafficking. We shouldn’t overlook the fact that the previous President worked hard to combat drug trafficking in this situation. The facts I am saying are the facts revealed during the investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department.
A young man is being held on suspicion of giving leadership to burn down President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s residence. It’s been established that his account also received funds from abroad. Additionally, some leading activists of the Aragalaya are currently having their accounts investigated. In a few days we will bring to light to the country how they received the money.
A year ago, the places where we are gathered today were in the grip of the Aragalaya activists. Today is the day when they crashed into the President’s house caused massive damage and looted the property.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has donated his house to Royal College. Today is the day when a mob stormed into his private residence and set it on fire including his library which had a rare collection of books in the whole Asia. These books were due to be donated to the Royalists.
One of the most innocent people’s representatives in Parliament, SLPP Polonnaruwa District MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala was brutally killed by a mob of protestors. 47 houses belonging to MPs Ministers and State Ministers were set on fire. Houses of local political leaders and supporters were burnt and destroyed.
July 9th has gone down in history as a day when a large amount of public property was destroyed.
We saw many countries in Middle East, South Africa, that faced Peoples’ struggles like this. None of these countries could rise up for years. Anarchism prevailed in these countries for many years. We saw citizens of these countries looting, killing and leaving those countries.
When Sri Lanka was facing a similar situation no one came forward to take over the country. Various parties were invited including the SJB leader Sajith Premadasa but no one was there to accept this challenge other than President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
We were in a bankrupt state when he took over the country. We were unable to provide the essential needs of the people. The inflation rate was 67%.Foreign reserves were zero. We were in short of foreign remittance. Our tourism sector was collapsed. Bank interest rate was 30%.
President Wickremesinghe took over the country in such a situation.
President Wickremesinghe has done a transformation that no leader in any country which faced a similar situation was unable to do.
According to the statistics of the CBSL Governor yesterday inflation rate has gone down up to 7%. Banks have been directed to reduce the bank rates up to 12%. The electricity tariffs have been reduced by 55%. The gas prices have come down up to 40%-50% .The tourism sector has been revived. After four years tourist arrivals have crossed 100,000 in June. Our exports have increased. The Sri Lanka Stock market has hit a record high after two years. The trust among business community has been rebuilt.
There is a democratic right to hold struggles. As a government we affirm that we will not let anarchism to prevail in the country under any circumstance.
The President is economically strengthening the country and taking it frontward. Therefore we request all citizens to stand together in a time where we have come out of the crisis and going forward as a country.
