Former President Maithripala Sirisena has paid a sum of Rs. 15 million from the total of Rs.100 million in compensation settlement to victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

Filing a motion before the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, the former President has sought further time to settle the remaining payment of Rs. 85 million.

Meanwhile, it is reported that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara has settled Rs.1.75 million from a total of Rs. 75 million.

Former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando is also reported to have settled Rs.1 million from his total compensation settlement of Rs. 50 million.

It is further reported that former National Intelligence Director Sisira Mendis has settled Rs.5 million from his total sum of Rs.10 million.

However, former State Intelligence Services Chief Nilantha Jayawardena is yet to provide any payments from his sum of Rs. 75 million in compensation.

The former state officials were ordered by the Supreme Court to pay their relevant settlements into a compensation fund for the victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings and their families prior to a deadline of July 12, 2023.

The verdict was issued after 12 petitions that were filed by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, the families of the victims of the attacks, Catholic priests and several others were heard before a seven-member bench headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya. (NewsWire)
