Accidents : Police consider new measures against motorists

The Sri Lanka Police is considering subjecting motorists involved in road accidents to a special medical examination, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa stated. 

Speaking to the media, SSP Thalduwa stated that preliminary discussions have commenced in this regard.

“It has been observed that drivers are not only intoxicated but are also using illegal substances. We expect to bring down equipment to test those driving under the influence of illegal substances,” he said. 

SSP Thalduwa said the Police will confirm the use of illegal substances by subjecting those arrested under suspicion to a medical examination.

Stating that along with equipment to test drunk driving, measures will also be taken to obtain equipment to test those driving under the use of illegal substances, he said that operations in this regard will commence soon. 

SSP Thalduwa revealed that a total of 137 bus accidents have been reported in 2023 as of July 15, while 1,135 accidents and 1,202 deaths due to accidents have been reported as of July 10.

The Police spokesman added that among the accidents, 2,088 had sustained serious injuries and 4,450 had sustained minor injuries. (NewsWire)
