Driver demerit points system in effect from January

The Ministry of Transport will introduce a demerit points system for traffic offences from January 01 2024. 

State Minister of Transport Lasantha Alagiyawanna stated that under this system, a driver who accumulates 24 demerit points will have his or her driving license cancelled immediately.

He further stated that the demerit points system is being introduced with the aim to prevent motor accidents.

The State Minister went on to say that parallelly, another system is also being created to identify and impose fines on motorists found guilty of other road and traffic violations. 

State Minister Alagiyawanna revealed that 5000 modern technical sets have been brought to Sri Lanka to monitor motorists. 

Meanwhile, the Department of Motor Traffic and the National Council of Road Safety will jointly establish a new speed limit regulation.

State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna stated that the measure has been taken to prevent accidents caused by overspeeding, which has seen a recent increase in incidents recently.

He added that the Department of Motor Traffic together with the National Council of Road Safety are working on the Gazette notification in this regard.
