The President’s Office has decided to suspend certain privileges awarded to former Presidents of Sri Lanka, such as the allocation of funds for electricity and water charges of official residences, and mobile phone bills.
According to Lankadeepa, the decision was notified after the Secretary of a former President had submitted bills for last month to the President’s Office this morning (July 24).
The former President’s Secretary has been notified that as per the Attorney General’s instructions, the President’s Office will not settle any bills of former Presidents’ starting now.
The Attorney General’s Office has issued the directive based on a verdict issued by former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva on the privileges to be awarded to former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga during the tenure of Mahinda Rajapaksa as President.
As per the verdict, former Presidents were only entitled to an official residence and funds for vehicle maintenance and fuel. (NewsWire)
