A probe will be launched into the alleged distortion of Sri Lanka’s national anthem during the opening ceremony of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) cricket tournament, the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government stated.

According to Ada Derana, issuing a circular today, the ministry’s secretary Ranjith Asoka stated that the distortion of the lyrics of the national anthem was considered a violation of the Constitution of Sri Lanka.

Ranjith Asoka further stated that it was regrettable that the lyrics of the national anthem had been distorted during an event with international attention.

Popular Sri Lankan singer Umara Sinhawansa who made a rendition of the national anthem at the LPL opening ceremony held yesterday was accused of mispronouncing certain keywords of the anthem.

The singer faced severe backlash on social media with many calling for an apology. (NewsWire)
