Weather Alert : Three updates

Sun – 

The sun will be directly over five areas of Sri Lanka today, the Meteorology Department stated. 

Accordingly, the sun will be above Bambalapitiya (Colombo District), Maliboda (Sabaragamuwa Province), Keppetipola (Badulla District), Badalkumbura (Monaragala District) and Pottuvil (Ampara District) at around 12.09 pm. 

As per the apparent southward relative motion of the sun, it is going to be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka until September 07. 

Rain –

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-western provinces. 

Fairly heavy showers above 50mm are likely at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara and Nuwara-eliya districts. 

A few showers are likely in Jaffna, Mannar and Anuradhapura districts. 

Fairly strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times in the western slopes of the central hills, Western, Southern, North-western, Northern and North-central provinces. 

Sea areas –

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle and Matara. 

Winds will be south-westerly and speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 60-65 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar and Kankasanthurai. 

Wind speed may increase up to 50-55 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar and Kankasanthurai can be very rough at times. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle may be rough at times. 

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. 

An increase in swell wave heights of about 2.0 – 2.5m can be expected in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil, via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. (NewsWire)
