A youth who had attempted to travel to Italy using a Polish residence visa has been apprehended at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake by Immigration and Emigration officials, it was reported.

According to Ada Derana, the suspect had been apprehended after he had attempted to board SriLankan Airlines flight UL- 217 flying to Doha in Qatar at 06.45 pm yesterday (Sep 08).

The arrested suspect has been identified as a 23-year-old resident of Negombo, with investigations revealing he had obtained forged documents by paying a sum of Rs. 4 million to a broker.

The documents presented at the SriLankan Airlines clearance counter had raised suspicions after which the suspect had been questioned by Immigration and Emigration officials, while technological checks on his documents had confirmed they were forged.

The officials had also found another passport with two fake immigration stamps, a Sri Lankan immigration stamp, and a fake Gulf Airlines flight ticket from the suspect’s hand luggage.

The suspect has been handed over to officials of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the airport for further investigations. (NewsWire)
