Weather Alert : Rains expected in several areas

Rains are expected in several parts of Sri Lanka today, the Department of Meteorology said. 

Accordingly, showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. 

Fairly heavy showers of about 50mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Puttalam, Galle and Matara districts.

A few showers may occur in the Mannar, Vavuniya and Anuradhapura districts. 

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Batticaloa, Ampara districts during the evening or night. 

Fairly strong winds about (40-45) kmph can be expected at times in western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee and Hambantota districts. 

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle. 

Winds will be south-westerly and speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-55 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai and in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai, and in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil can be rough at times. 

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (NewsWire)
