Cabinet approval has been granted for the implementation of a pilot project to improve the water quality in Beira Lake in Colombo for a period of 5 years, subject to the necessary guidance of an expert committee.

According to the government, the policy approval of the Cabinet was granted in July 2023 to proceed with the implementation of the project with the involvement of several government agencies to improve the water quality of Beira Lake using micro–Nano Bubble Technology, Carbon Fiber Biofilm technology and environmentally friendly enzymes.

The proposal in this regard was presented by Groepo Pte. Ltd. (GPL), a Singaporean company with Japanese ownership.

However, taking into consideration the further information presented by the project investor, the Cabinet has approved a new combined proposal presented by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance together with the Minister of Urban Development and Housing.

Cabinet nod has been received to implement the proposed pilot project for a period of 5 years, subject to the necessary guidance of an expert committee consisting of experts on water quality from all universities in the country, representatives of all relevant testing institutions and other relevant institutions and to take a decision on the further implementation of the project, based on the results achieved.
