Weather Alert : Rains expected in several areas today

Rains are expected in several parts of Sri Lanka today (Sep 14), according to the forecast issued by the Department of Meteorology for the next 24 hours commencing at 05.30 am today. 

Showers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Puttalam, Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. 

Fairly heavy showers above 50mm are likely at some places in the Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara districts. 

Several spells of showers may occur in the Hambantota and Kurunegala districts, while showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Batticaloa, Ampara districts during the evening or night. 

Fairly strong winds about 40-45 kmph can be expected at times in the western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle and Matara. 

Winds will be south-westerly and speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanthurai and in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanthurai, and in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil can be rough at times. 

An increase of swell wave heights about 2.0 – 2.5m can be expected in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil, via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. 

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thunderstorms. (NewsWire)
