The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has been handed over the probe into the shooting incident involving MP Uddika Premarathna in Anuradhapura last night.
Issuing a statement, the Police Media Unit stated that the CID was handed over the investigations on the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The Police stated that an unidentified group that had arrived in a car had opened fire at the Parliamentarian’s private vehicle that had been parked near his residence.
The shooting had taken place after the MP had parked the vehicle outside his home and was walking towards his private residence.
MP Uddika Premarathna had escaped unhurt as the armed men had fired at his vehicle, damaging the back window.
The Police stated that the suspects have not been identified, while it has been found that they had used a pistol to carry out the shooting.
The Criminal Investigations Department has taken over the probe into the incident.
MP Premarathna, who is a popular Sri Lankan actor, entered Parliament from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) for the first time in 2020.
However, earlier this month (Sep 2023) he decided to become an independent member in Parliament. (NewsWire)
