The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) organization has stated that the recent decision to cancel the nominations for the Local Government (LG) elections is expected to result in a loss exceeding Rs. 1 billion to the state.

Rohana Hettiarachchi, the Executive Director of PAFFREL, expressed this concern, mentioning that such a decision during an ongoing economic crisis was ill-advised and not in the best interest of the country.

Hettiarachchi also highlighted that the Election Commission of Sri Lanka had already allocated substantial funds for the 2023 LG polls, including ballot paper printing.

On Wednesday(20), the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Council, and Local Government unanimously agreed to cancel the nominations submitted LG. This choice was made considering the challenges faced by the candidates due to the election postponement. (NewsWire)
