The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) is set to stage a protest in front of the Colombo National Hospital today, highlighting the various issues in Sri Lanka’s Health Sector.

Issuing a statement, the GMOA said there has been a long-standing issue of medicine shortage and the importation of substandard medicines in the country.

Over 1,500 doctors and specialists have left the country due to issues surrounding salary payments, unsuitable work environments in hospitals, and uncertainty over their future.

Instead of threatening the health staff and establishing foreign universities that award medical degrees, the government and Health Ministry must protect the existing health sector staff, the Association pointed out.

The GMOA said that steps are required to be taken against the actions of the Health Ministry and the Health Minister which are severely affecting Sri Lanka’s Health Sector at present.

Therefore, the GMOA has decided to stage a protest in front of the Colombo National Hospital today calling for the protection of Free Health Services and doctors.

The GMOA said that doctors from all state hospitals in all districts will join the strike action. (NewsWire)
