The Association of Sri Lankan Neurologists (ASN) has raised concerns over the supply of unregistered Intravenous Immunoglobulins (IVG) in Sri Lanka.
Issuing a statement, the Association said the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) revealed via a recent press briefing the administration of the medication that had resulted in complications in patients with neurological disorders.
Stating that IVG is a medicine used often by Neurologists in life-threatening serious neurological disorders, ASN revealed that adverse events were recorded for the said product in patients under the care of two neurologists.
ASN said that the matter had been immediately brought to the notice of the authorities by the two neurologists.
Raising concerns over the matter, the Association of Sri Lankan Neurologists has presented a 06-point proposal to the health authorities to address the issue.
ASN has called for several measures, including the immediate withdrawal of the product, monitoring of patients who have been administered the medicine, and avoiding urgent purchases with registration waivers which result in the purchase of substandard medication.
The Association has also called for legal action to be taken against those responsible for allowing the purchase of such substandard medicines which it said are being administered to unsuspecting poor patients receiving treatment at state hospitals. (NewsWire)
