Sri Lankan authorities have issued warnings for extreme weather conditions in several parts of the country today.

The Department of Irrigation says the existing flood levels could increase once again in the Divisional Secretariat areas of Akuressa, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Kamburupitiya, and Matara. The department has urged residents of the areas to remain vigilant of floods.

The Irrigation Department further warned that minor flooding could be experienced in the Bope, Botale, Nagoda, and Baddegama areas today. The department requested the public in the areas to remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Police says vehicle traffic on the Rendapola-Ambewela road has been halted due to the road sinking near the Black Bridge (Kalu Palama). The Police requested motorists to use alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion.

Furthermore, the Road Development Authority (RDA) says vehicular movement on the Southern Expressway remains disrupted following the earth slip reported near the 102km Post between Pinnaduwa and Imaduwa interchanges last night.

Traffic on both sides of the expressway has been blocked since last night, while the RDA is hopeful that 2 of the 4 lanes of the expressway can be reopened for vehicular movement by this afternoon (Oct. 12).

Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology predicts showers or thundershowers over most parts of the island during the afternoon or night today.

The department says fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places in the Uva, Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Eastern provinces. (NewsWire)
