Navy seizes large drug haul worth over Rs. 94 Mn

The Sri Lanka Navy has seized a large haul of drugs worth over Rs. 94 million in the beach area of Urumalei in Talaimannar today (Oct 16).

Issuing a statement, the Navy said that over 04 kilos of Crystal Methamphetamine (ICE), about 01 kilos of heroin, and over 05 kilos of hashish were found concealed in a dinghy.

The drug haul was seized during the Navy’s routine search operations conducted with the aim of curbing unlawful activities such as drug trafficking within Sri Lanka’s maritime and coastal zones.

The raid was conducted by the SLNS Thammanna in the North Central Naval Command in the Urumalei beach area early today during which a suspicious dinghy at the beach was searched.

The search led to the recovery of four packages of Crystal Methamphetamine weighing about 04.194 kilos, a parcel of heroin weighing around 01.034 kilos and five packages of hashish weighing about 05.254 kilos. 

The consignment of narcotics, with a street value of over Rs. 94 million, and the dinghy were taken into naval custody.

The seized drugs and the dinghy have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau in Talaimannar for legal action. (NewsWire)
