Sri Lanka Weather : Five key updates

  • Many roads in Colombo, including Maradana are reportedly inundated due to heavy rains experienced in the area. Severe traffic congestion has been reported as a result.
  • Severe traffic congestion has been reported in the Battaramulla area and Parliament Road due to heavy showers and due to several roads being inundated. 
  • The Met Department says the Intertropical Convergence Zone, where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere converge, is affecting the island’s weather. Due to its influence, the current rainy conditions in Sri Lanka are expected to be enhanced. 
  • Showers or thundershowers will occur over most parts of Sri Lanka after 2:00 p.m. Heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in the Uva, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces. Showers may occur in coastal areas of the Western, Southern and Eastern provinces and in the Mannar and Jaffna districts during the morning too.
  • Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island, particularly during evening or night. (NewsWire)
