Inclement weather : Five updates

  • Weather forecast for today –

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in most provinces of Sri Lanka today. Showers may occur in the Western, Southern and Eastern provinces in the morning. Fairly heavy showers of about 75mm are likely at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces. 

  • Weather forecast for Sea areas – 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Pottuvil. Winds will be south-westerly or variable in direction and wind speed will be 20-30 kmph. The sea areas around the island will be slight. 

  • Flood warnings – 

The Irrigation Department has issued an ‘Amber’ alert for flood warning in some of the low-lying areas of the Nilwala River valley in Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Pasgoda, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara and Devinuwara divisional secretariat divisions. The flood warning message is effective until 8.00 a.m. tomorrow (Oct 24).

  • Landslide warnings-

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has issued landslide warnings to the Badulla, Galle, Hambantota, Kalutara, Kandy, Matara, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts. Some areas have been issued yellow and amber alerts. The warning is effective until 03.00 pm today. 

  • Disaster situation – 

A 17-year-old male Advanced Level (A/L) student of the Dorapane Maha Vidyalaya reportedly died after a mound of earth collapsed on a house in the Dadayamkanda area in Kolonna. The incident occurred last night ( Oct 22). A total of 560 people from 147 families have been severely affected due to the inclement weather conditions in Sri Lanka, while one death and one injury have been reported, so far. (NewsWire)
