The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) employees have been convened to Colombo to stage a large-scale protest on Wednesday (Nov 01).

CEB United Trade Union Alliance Convener Ranjan Jayalal said the protest is being held based on several demands, including the government’s decision to sell the CEB.

Ranjan Jayalal said the protest will be held in front of the CEB Headquarters in Colombo tomorrow.

Providing details of the protest, he said the government is preparing to sell the Ceylon Electricity Board to 14 foreign companies.

“We have received information that it will be submitted to the Cabinet today for approval. The power plant has four distribution terminals. We have received information that these four and the distribution system owned by the Leco Company are going to be sold to the Indian Tata Company. Arrangements have been made to give the transmission section to the concerned company. We also have information that all arrangements have been made to sell the Norochchole thermal power plant to the Chinese company. The remaining six companies are working to separate and sell the hydropower plants and thermal plants,” Ranjan Jayalal revealed.

Stating that the power plants will be given separately on November 01, he said that this is being carried out on the 54th anniversary of the establishment of the CEB, which is tomorrow.

“We have asked all the employees to come to Colombo on that day. All the employees of the power plant offices all over the island will start a massive protest movement at 12 noon,” Ranjan Jayalal said. (NewsWire)
