The government has decided to hand over the Nuwara Eliya Post Office, an iconic building, to the Taj Samudra Hotel as a hotel project, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said.
Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing today, Minister Gunwardena said the Nuwara Eliya post office was in a very dilapidated state, where it cannot be renovated or painted, and cannot be maintained by the government.
He further revealed that a proposal has been submitted to the President to effectively utilise that inactive and underutilized building as a resource
“Indian tourists who come through Sita Eliya can visit the tourist attractions in Nuwara Eliya as well,” he added.
The Nuwara Eliya Post Office is an iconic building which is situated at the centre of the Nuwara Eliya town.
This two-storey red brick building built to Tudor Revival architectural style is one of the oldest post offices in the country. (NewsWire)
