Extreme weather : Five updates

  • Today’s Weather forecast : 

The Met Department says the prevailing showery condition over Sri Lanka is expected to enhance further today. Therefore, showers or thundershowers will occur in most provinces after 01.00 p.m. Heavy showers of about 100 mm are likely at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western, Northwestern, North-Central and Uva provinces. Showers may occur in some places in Northern and Eastern provinces during the morning. 

  • Weather forecast for sea areas : 

Showers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the Island, particularly during the afternoon or night. Winds will be Easterly or variable in direction over the sea areas around the island. Wind speed will be 20-30 kmph. The sea areas around the island will be slight. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

  • Landslide:

The Police state a landslide in the Peradeniya Town has killed a 68-year-old man. Four shops in the area have also been damaged. However, the landslide has not blocked traffic on the main road.

  • Railway:

The Railway Department states train services on the upcountry line have been disrupted due to a landslide between Ohiya and Idalgashinna. 

  • Traffic : 

The Police state traffic on the Nuwara Eliya – Colombo main road has been completely blocked by a tree falling across the road between Weligalla and Geli Oya.

The Badulla – Colombo main road has been blocked from Belihuloya after a mound of earth collapsed onto the road. (NewsWire)
