Newly appointed Sports Minister Harin Fernando has proposed the appointment of a Sports Ombudsman to resolve the issues of Sri Lankan sports persons.

Addressing a forum, Minister Harin Fernando said the Sports Ombudsman will be stationed at the Sports Ministry daily to resolve issues of athletes.

“The continuous issues pertaining to over 60 federations do not allow the minister and officials to resolve those faced by our sports persons. So a Sports Ombudsman will be appointed just to hear the issues of our athletes,” he said.

Assuring that he was not here to protect any persons, the Sports Minister further said he has been given a responsibility that requires a lot of work and certain changes.

Stating that he is not solely a Cricket Minister, he assured that he will work towards the development of all other sports.

Commenting on the ban imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC), Minister Fernando assured that he will hold discussions with the ICC and make necessary changes to promote cricket in Sri Lanka.

The Sports Minister also pointed out that cricketers were only being sourced from certain areas and that they needed to promote talent hunts to other areas as well. (NewsWire)
