Weather Alert : Heavy rains expected in several areas today

Weather forecast for Dec 12, 2023:

The Met Department says heavy rains are expected in several parts of Sri Lanka today. Showers will occur at times in the Eastern Uva and North-central provinces and the Nuwara Eliya district. Several spells of showers may occur in the Northern province and the Hambantota district. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other areas of the island after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers above 75mm are likely at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Eastern and Western provinces and the Galle and Matara districts. Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Uva provinces in the morning.

Weather forecast for sea areas: 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Kankasanthurai via Batticaloa and Trincomalee. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island, particularly during the evening or night. Winds will be North-easterly in direction and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 40-45 kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee. The sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee can be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

Flood warnings : 

A considerable rainfall has been recorded in most of the Upstream and Middle Reach catchment areas of the Nilwala River Basin as of 11.00 PM yesterday. By analyzing the current rainfall situation and river water levels of Hydrological Stations in the Nilwala River, there is a possibility of a flood situation in the lowline areas of the Nilwala River valley situated in Pasgoda, Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara and Devinuwara D/S Divisions.
