When will the Presidential Election be held? Dates predicted

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader, MP Udaya Gammanpila predicts that the Presidential Election is most likely to be held between September 18 and October 18 of this year, as per the Constitution of Sri Lanka. 

Addressing the media on Monday (Jan 08), MP Gammanpila said as per Article 31(3) of the Constitution, the Presidential Election should be held between September 18 and October 18, 2024.

He further said that based on this, the National Elections Commission will call for the Presidential Election during this period. 

Explaining further, MP Gammanpila said the election of the President shall be conducted not less than one month and not more than two months before the expiration of the term of office of the President in office.

Stating that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa assumed office on November 18, 2019, and the term of five years will end on November 18, 2024, the MP said, therefore, not less than one month means before October 18 and not more than two months means after September 18.

“As per the Constitution, the Presidential election shall be held between September 18 and October 18 of this year. According to our calculations, the Election Commission shall declare the election and nomination dates any date between July 17 and September 04,” MP Gammanpila added. (NewsWire)
