Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara stated that officials of the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) took 15 months to approve a proposal to increase the department’s revenue.

“Now the revenue of DMT has increased by 300%. No one blames the officials who delayed the approval. These were the ways to reduce the VAT percentage” he said.

“Another proposal was presented enabling individuals to acquire custom vehicle number plates by paying a fee. For instance, someone can pay up to Rs. 1.5 million and, if desired, have their name on the number plate. The treasury is yet to approve this proposal after several months,” he added.

The Minister went on to comment that these officials’ intention is to deliberately put the government in a state of distress. He added that he believes legal action should be taken against the officials to recover the income lost due to the delayed approval of these proposals. (NewsWire)
