Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has hinted that calls for the abolition of the Executive Presidency may be an attempt to postpone the Presidential Election.

Commenting on reports that the claims for the abolition of the Executive Presidency are to postpone the Presidential Election, MP Rajapaksa acknowledged that it may be true.

Stating that it could be a possibility, the former President said, “We know Ranil. So this could happen, sometimes.”

Speaking to reporters, however, MP Rajapaksa hinted at support for the abolition of the Executive Presidency.

MP Rajapaksa said he has no issues with the Executive Presidency being abolished and was in favour of such a decision.

“I was executive president before, now it is of no use to me as I am done holding the designation. But, I also believe it would be good to abolish the executive presidency, as this is what the country is asking for at present,” he said.

MP Rajapaksa also expressed confidence that his Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party will win any election that is held in the future. (NewsWire)
