‘20 murders in 8 days’: significant reduction in crimes during holiday season – Police

A police report has revealed that there has been a reduction in the number of crimes and road accidents reported to police stations during the Sinhala & Tamil New Year period this year, compared to 2023.

This was revealed following an investigation regarding the crimes and traffic accidents reported during the period from 10th April 2024 to 17th April 2024, compared to the same period last year.

Accordingly, compared to the year 2023, in the 08 days of April holiday season of the year 2024,

  1. Murders reported have decreased from 26 to 20 incidents.
  1. Incidents Causing injuries have decreased from 507 cases to 389 cases.
  1. Assault cases have decreased from 4,431 cases to 4,018 cases.
  1. Disputes/conflict incidents have decreased from 4,425 to 3,936 incidents.
  1. Cases of Theft of property/ money has decreased from 339 to 244.
  1. House breaking complaints have decreased from 195 to 150
  1. Complaints of Chains snatching incidents have decreased from 29 to 23.
  1. There has been a reduction in arson complaints from 48 to 46.
  1. Incidents of obstructing the duty of police officers have decreased from 9 to 7.

Police say that according to the above data, compared to the previous year, it has been revealed that crimes have decreased significantly during the New Year season this year.

Police headquarters further states that this is mainly due to the ongoing Yukthiya’ operation carried out throughout the island.

Also, the IGP has given instructions to further intensify the ‘Yukthiya’ operations to combat drugs and underworld crimes, and to prepare crime prevention plans to suit the police divisions throughout the island and carry out operations within the next three months. (NewsWire)
