Airport facial recognition system helps nab wanted criminal

A key member of an underworld group has been apprehended while attempting to flee Sri Lanka on Sunday (Apr 2).

According to the Police, the suspect had used a forged passport and had attempted to leave the country via the Katunayake Airport.

He was identified via the facial recognition system installed at the airport and was, thereafter, arrested by Criminal Investigations Department officials at the airport.

The suspect is wanted by the Mulleriyawa Police for having brought in and distributing 10 kilos of ICE in Sri Lanka.

Following the arrest, the suspect, a 47-year-old resident of Angoda, was handed over to the Mulleriyawa Police Station for investigations. 

The suspect was found to be in possession of a forged passport, a fake National Identity Card (NIC), and 10.5 grams of ICE at the time of his arrest. (Newswire)
