SL Mission in New York hosts “Sri Lanka in Focus 2024” photographic exhibition

The Sri Lanka Mission in New York hosted the “Sri Lanka in Focus 2024” photographic exhibition in association with the America-Sri Lanka Photographic Art Society of Los Angeles and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB). 

According to the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York, the New York-based diplomatic corps was welcomed to the opening of the “Sri Lanka in Focus” 2024 photographic exhibition on 25 April 2024. 

This event, open to the public last week (Apr 26), showcased over 80 images capturing the natural beauty, wildlife, and rich heritage of Sri Lanka.  

The President of the General Assembly Ambassador Dennis Francis, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York Ambassador Mohan Pieris declared the Exhibition open at a ceremony and remarked on the significance of this photographic exhibition, which offers a glimpse of the rich biodiversity of fauna and flora offered in Sri Lanka, with eight UNESCO World Heritage sites. 

He noted that this photographic exhibition commemorates a unique event of life, nature, or humankind, serving as a memento for all of us to remember the experience and the artwork encountered through photography. He highlighted the importance of environmental sustainability and the protection of natural wonders.

The President of the General Assembly speaking at the event, said that “a walk through this gallery is to be transported on a journey through the majestic landscapes and ecosystems of Sri Lanka”. He noted that exhibitions of this nature strengthen the bonds of friendship and foster connections between Sri Lanka and the global community. He highlighted the role of art and culture in facilitating dialogue and uniting the nations and peoples of the world.

The exhibition was a resounding success, with many of the attendees expressing their delight at the unseen images of Sri Lanka’s wildlife. It marked a celebration of the beauty of Sri Lanka’s landscape and wildlife and served as a reminder to cherish the power of visual storytelling.

Ambassador Pieris praised the efforts of the America-Sri Lanka Photographic Art Society in sharing Sri Lanka’s beauty with global audiences. Photographers whose work was displayed received certificates of appreciation from the President of the General Assembly.

This exhibition also aligned with Earth Day observed on 22 April. Before being held in New York, the exhibition was first held on 20 & 21 April in Los Angeles and will continue to Washington DC in May. (Newswire)
