National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader MP Wimal Weerawansa demanded that the Government maintain transparency in its discussions with the visiting Indian Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar.

Addressing Parliament, Weerawansa said that at least 10 to 12 projects are expected to be agreed upon during Jaishankar’s visit.

“I’d like to request the attention of the Leader of the House’s to the visit of Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar. According to the information we have received, this visit aims to pressure Sri Lanka into entering at least 10 to 12 agreements,” Weerawansa said.

He noted that these projects include the India-funded unique ID card project and several power and energy projects with India’s Adani Group.

“The extension of this visit would be the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Sri Lanka in August. This House has a justified right to be informed about the purpose of the Indian Foreign Minister’s visit of only several hours. We also need to know from the Government what the 10 to 12 projects are that Sri Lanka is expected to agree upon,” Weerawansa added.

MP Weerawansa has previously raised concerns over the India funded ID card project, drawing attention to how biometric and personal information will be handed under the project. (Newswire)
