National Peoples’ Power (NPP) member Wasantha Samarasinghe has initiated action against a group of lawyers linked to the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), accusing them of hindering the progress of NPP Presidential candidate MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake by spreading false information ahead of the Presidential polls.

Speaking to the media, the Convenor of the NPP-affiliated Voice Against Corruption (VAC) Wasantha Samarasinghe said that the group of lawyers linked to the SJB were spreading false information about MP Dissanayake.

Samrasinghe said that the spread of false information has taken place with the intention of affecting the progress of MP Dissanayake, who he said is among the favourites to win the election.

Wasantha Samarasinghe said that as part of these efforts, the group of lawyers linked to the SJB had spread false rumours about him over the last few days.

He said the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka Jayantha Jayasuriya has been informed in writing about the incident, and on the grounds of contempt of court.

“I have informed the chief justice of two lawyers who have disclosed facts of an ongoing case at the Mount Lavinia Court. The lawyers have made statements to the public of facts that had not been disclosed or brought before the judges hearing the case,” he said.

Wasantha Samarasinghe further said that the BAR Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has been requested to conduct a probe into the two lawyers linked to the SJB who are allegedly spreading false information in public spaces. (Newswire)
