Inflation stays below zero despite a rise in food costs

The overall inflation in Colombo, measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI), stood at -2.0% in April 2025, compared to -2.6% in March, according to the Department of Census and Statistics.

Food inflation rose to 1.3% from 0.6% in March, while non-food inflation showed a slight improvement to -3.6% from -4.1% in the previous month.

The CCPI declined marginally to 191.2 in April from 191.6 in March. Month-on-month inflation recorded a -0.2% change, with food contributing -0.12% and non-food -0.07%.

The CCPI Core inflation rate, which excludes food, energy, and transport, edged up to 178.8 from 178.6 in March, showing a year-on-year rise of 0.8%. (Newswire)
