Today, May 1, 2025, Sri Lanka is commemorating International Workers’ Day with numerous rallies and events organized by various political parties and trade unions across the country. The Sri Lanka Police have implemented special security and traffic arrangements, particularly in Colombo, where at least 15 events are scheduled.
Here are the key May Day rallies taking place:
- Colombo
– National People’s Power (NPP): The NPP is holding its main rally at Galle Face Green in Colombo, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. This event marks a return to Galle Face after previous restrictions on political gatherings at this location were lifted.
– Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP): The SLPP’s rally is taking place at the Ananda Samarakoon Open Air Theatre in Nugegoda at 2:00 PM. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected to attend.
– Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP): The SLFP is conducting a commemorative event at its headquarters on Darley Road, Colombo 10, with floral tributes to former leader T.B. Ilangaratne and participation from trade union members.
– Other Notable Locations in Colombo: Additional rallies and events are being held at Hyde Park, Viharamahadevi Park Open Air Theatre, the Colombo Municipal Council premises, Armour Street, Keselwatta near the E.A. Gunasinghe statue, P.D. Sirisena Stadium, the Postal Head Office, Kosgashandiya, and the Public Library.
- Outside Colombo
– Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB): The SJB is hosting its rally at 2:00 PM in Talawakelle town, led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, with an expected attendance of around 50,000 people.
– Sarvajana Balaya (People’s Power Party) : This party is organizing a rally at the Warakapola weekly fair grounds at 10:30 AM, under the theme “Workers Towards Entrepreneurship,” led by MP Dilith Jayaweera.
– Frontline Socialist Party: Their rally is scheduled at the Lalith Athulathmudali Grounds in Kirulapone.
