Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (2 May) inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Kerala, marking the country’s first dedicated transshipment hub.

The port is designed to capture a significant share of cargo currently routed through Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port, which has long served as South Asia’s primary transshipment center.

Developed under a public-private partnership by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, Vizhinjam is expected to reduce India’s reliance on foreign ports for container handling. The new facility, located in Thiruvananthapuram, aims to reshape regional shipping routes and strengthen India’s position in international trade.

Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port currently handles around 70% of India’s transshipped cargo, and industry experts see Vizhinjam as a strategic effort to shift that volume back to Indian shores. (Newswire)
