Can’t UNDO

In some of the technical tools we use in our daily life, if something goes wrong, there is a way to fix it or to sterilize it. But if something goes wrong in real life, is there a way to fix it?

We tell the story that if you do, you do, if you say, you say, if you take, you get, and if you give, you give. Even if those words are spoken, the true meaning cannot be changed. That means you can’t do it. This is a profound concept that says that actions taken in daily life, decisions made, or words spoken cannot be reversed. Therefore, we should think carefully about everything we do, say and do through social media, make decisions carefully and make sure to understand the results of our actions.

Today, wrong information, wrong ideas, hate speech, bad information, incitement, things that make a person uncomfortable are constantly happening and are quickly socialized through social media. Such events can affect the mind, heart and even the life of the person who is inconvenienced.

Every one of us commits mistakes like this in society knowingly or unknowingly. With the supreme objective of preventing damage to another person’s life from those mistakes, reducing the things that happen in the society that make another person feel uncomfortable and to make a reason for someone who sees and reads those things to reduce such incidents from their own hands and to educate the society of the United Nations.

Development Programme: Ohrujafala United Nations Children’s Fund: Mahatma and the Sri Lanka Sustainable Development Objectives Fund: A work done with another creative group led by Rasa Bban Ata Me Baga is the program called “Karot Kara Ohrudha Karina Kanno”.

Based on this theme, five creative videos in Sinhala and Tamil languages under four fictional characters named Kaveena, Mohammad, Nishadi and Vasala were posted on social media based on true stories that happened in the society.

Kavena in these stories is a young woman who always tries to do something for the society. A young woman who can work. But society did not let her do any work.

Mohammed is a young man like the people here with us. But he is a young man who thinks differently for everyone. The story that young man told is being misinterpreted and it goes so far that it turns into a racist riot.

Nishadi is a mother. Not just any mother. A special mother. A mother who works to take care of her special needs child. But that mother has a lot of stories to tell.

Vasala is a writer. One day, Vasala meets Ahambulesha Nishadhi. From there, Vasala continues to search for stories. Vasala finds many stories of people who have been wronged, such as Mohammed and Kaveena. By collecting all of these, Vasala begins to write a separate story.

The launch of all these stories was held on March 28th at the Aushnatha Hotel in Battaramulla. UNDP activists, journalists, civil society activists, and scholars participated in the event. Various discussions were held on topics such as misinformation, misconceptions, hate speech, misinformation, and incitement in society.

Some of them are as follows.

“Hateful statements and misinformation never come to us in disguise. It appears to us to be very accurate information. It plays out in front of us. The carrier and creator of this knows that this is misinformation.”

Recently, there was a discussion about the allegations and hateful statements made against an obstetrician and gynecologist, as well as the corruption of a medical profession and how they were published in various ways on social media. There, ‘Something may go wrong on our part. Depending on how we face that moment. But if we are careful not to make that mistake, we can prevent someone from losing their life somewhere. Because the limit of a person’s patience, the limit of tolerance is ultimately measured by the response to it,’ experts told the society that the words we say and the decisions we make at this moment cannot be taken back.
