The National People’s Power (NPP) has emerged as the largest party in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) but has fallen short of securing the majority needed to elect the Mayor.
According to Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman, the NPP secured 48 seats, while opposition parties collectively won 69 seats in the 117-member council. “NPP 48, Opposition 69,” Rahman posted on Facebook.
Sources indicate that the SJB claimed 29 seats, while the United National Party (UNP) secured 13. The remaining seats have been distributed among several smaller parties.
However, it is important to note that the official results of the CMC election have not yet been released.
With no party holding a clear majority, the next Colombo Mayor will need to be elected through a council vote. The NPP will require the backing of at least 11 additional council members, while opposition parties are expected to seek coalition arrangements to form a majority and control the council. (Newswire)
